This is a great treat to impress your friends: boat-shaped turnovers with golden seams and a burst of flavor from the Akkawi cheese and nigella seeds inside. Bread-based dishes like this one, and the spreads that accompany them, like hummus, are served up at any time of the day, from breakfast, to picnics, right through to dinner. I always thought of fatayer as a baking affair prepared by women — as I’d seen my mom and her friends do - - to be enjoyed at a big azoumeh, or house party, so I was shocked the first time I saw burly men making them en-masse in bakeries in Lebanon, where men hold more of the large-scale production-type jobs. Fatayer uses a vegan pastry dough. The filling here is vegetarian with Akkawi cheese and nigella seeds, common items found in Arab and Middle Eastern markets.…
